Biosolids are a highly effective and efficient source of nutrients for soil, which are generally better for the environment and water quality than commercial fertilisers. Research conducted in the Lake Clifton area shows that biosolids are a safe and effective soil amendment if properly applied and managed.
Biosolids supplied by the Water Corporation have been applied to parts of the Forest Product Commission's (FPC) South West pine plantations during winter for a number of years.
From May to October 2012, the FPC will apply up to 2,550 dry tonnes of biosolids to 85 hectares of the Myalup Pine Plantation to enhance tree growth. The biosolids will be applied to parts of the plantation close to Emu Drive and Guthrie Road. Please refer to the map below for the exact location of the application sites.

This will be the last year that biosolids are to be applied to the Myalup Pine Plantation. Other options for the beneficial use of biosolids for forestry over winter are being considered and these will not focus on the Shire of Harvey.
The use of biosolids in Western Australia must meet stringent regulatory standards and the application to the Myalup Pine Plantation will be in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act 1986 Licence L818/2007/1.
We believe that the use of biosolids as an organic fertiliser is an appropriate sustainable use and an environmentally responsible way to help manage the solid materials from our wastewater treatment plants.
