Water services

Planning for water services

As our state continues to experience the effects of a drying climate, planning for water services to meet future demand is ever more important. Traditional water sources from shallow groundwater and dams will take more of a back seat and make way for a new range of sources and efficiencies, including groundwater abstraction from deeper aquifers, and greater recycling of treated wastewater.

Water sources and supply

Water used in Western Australia comes from three major sources - groundwater, desalinated seawater and surface water. In this section you will find information on our water sources, rainfall, supply and usage figures and regional water supply.

Water quality

We are committed to providing drinking water that is both safe and pleasant to drink and meets Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. This section includes information on our water quality monitoring program, what is in your drinking water and health and aesthetic water quality information for each locality of WA.

Drainage

We manage about 2250 kilometres of rural main drains and 828 kilometres of drains in the metropolitan area, diverting water from more than 400 000 hectares of land and preventing the flooding and waterlogging of approximately 260 000 properties.

Wastewater

Millions of litres of wastewater is produced each day in WA, and over 100 wastewater treament plants around the state treat and dispose of this wastewater. The collection, treatment and disposal of wastewater is an integral part of the water cycle that maintains the balance of water in nature. In this section you will find information on wastewater treatment plants, biosolids, wastewater disposal and our infill sewerage program.

Water recycling

Water recycling is an essential part of maintaining a reliable, sustainable and safe water supply for Western Australia. In our future planning, recycling of treated wastewater will play a greater part in ensuring a sustainable water future. In this section you will find information on uses for recyled water, our water recycling targets, the groundwater replenishment trial and how recycled water is used in WA.

Our projects

Our capital works program is driven by population growth, water source development in response to the drying climate, increasing regulatory requirements and asset replacement. This section contains information on all current planned projects across the state.
