Recycled water can be used as process water for cooling towers and boilers in various industries including chemical/fertiliser production, manufacturing, mining, mineral processing and power generation, which may otherwise use drinking water for these purposes.
Kwinana Water Recycling Plant (KWRP) was commissioned in 2004 and reduces industry demand for scheme water by up to 6 gigalitres a year, which is equivalent to about 2% of Perth's total scheme water use.

Woodman Point Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) delivers up to 16.7 megalitres (16,700,000 litres) of secondary treated wastewater to KWRP each day. The water is treated by microfiltration, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet disinfection before the high grade industrial water is delivered to customers via dedicated pipework.
Some industrial water recycling is also happening outside of the metropolitan area. The Boddington Wastewater Treatment Plant currently provides up to 0.5 megalitres per day of treated wastewater to Boddington Gold Mine for industrial process water and Kambalda Wastewater Treatment Plant is providing 0.75 megalitres per day to BHP for process uses. The Alcoa Refinery in Pinjarra also utilises recycled water provided by the Pinjarra Wastewater Treatment plant for use in the refining process.
East Rockingham Wastewater Treatment Plant will be commissioned in 2015 and will service the south-west corridor from Kwinana to Singleton. This WWTP will be located within the Rockingham Industrial Zone and could potentially provide recycled water to future industry in the area.
The Water Corporation will also continue to work towards improving water recycling at our metropolitan WWTPs, including reducing scheme water use to less than 10% at Beenyup, Subiaco, Woodman Point and Kwinana WWTPs.
