Sewer mining is the process of extracting wastewater from the wastewater system itself, treating it locally and then using it for 'fit for purpose' uses.
Sewer mining has not been practiced widely in Perth mostly due to the fact that in most cases groundwater is a cheaper alternative.
As this situation changes, with groundwater sources becoming fully allocated, sewer mining may become a more attractive option. Sewer mining can supply water for irrigation of golf courses and public open spaces, toilet flushing and garden irrigation for commercial properties.
Sewer mining has been successfully implemented in other States where no other suitable alternative water supply exists.
